You don't need to run the kernel in 64-bit mode to use L64. Yes, it defaults to 32-bit if you haven't asked it to run in 64-bit mode.
However, after downloading and running the update, restarting my computer, a mac pro, AND in 64bit kernel, my logic starts up with (32bit) at the splash screen. I have recently updated my Logic 9 to 64bit.
